Thanksgiving Travel Safety Tips

Over 150,000 Delawareans are scheduled to hit the road over this Thanksgiving holiday.  Here are some tips to arrive at your destinations safe and sound.

Travel at off peak hours.  Nothing new but most of us don’t try to plan our travel accordingly.  Below are the best times to put the wheels to the road on your trip:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday before 6 a.m. and after 11 p.m.
  • Thursday and Friday before 7 a.m. and after 9 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday before 9 a.m. and after 9 p.m.

Stay aware of traffic.  Whether you choose Google Maps, Waze or some other nav app, keep checking for any delays, construction or accidents so you can re-route if necessary.

Keep abreast of weather changes.  Check the weather prior to your trip start.  Many apps give hourly forecasts.  Nasty weather can’t always be avoided but you can potentially drive during the least worst part of bad weather.

Ensure you have a auto travel kit.  Your kit should contain a blanket, flashlight with extra batteries, drinkable water, cell phone charger (like any of us leave the house without that!), and basic flat tire tools.  As the old adage says, “better safe than sorry”.

DO NOT TEXT.  Texting and driving causes accidents and deaths.  It can wait.  Or if it can’t, pull over at the next safe spot and then proceed on your way.

So if you’re hitting the road to spend this Thanksgiving with friends or family, take your time and make sure you arrive alive!
